چکیده

This paper discusses an approach for tailoring material properties in parts fabricated using Layered Manufacturing (LM). Solid model of the part is subdivided into various sub regions based on stress analysis. All subdivided regions are fabricated together by using Rapid Prototyping with process parameter values assigned as per their stress values. As mechanical properties are varying with process parameters and hence fabricated part will have customized mechanical properties for different regions. Commercial software MIMICS® is used to convert Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computer Tomography (CT) scan data, which is similar to data required in LM process. In the present work, it was observed that, this software can be best utilized for generating solid model from JPG images obtained through FEM analysis, for customizing mechanical properties. Various issues in implementing this, have been discussed and a case study of crane hook part is presented to demonstrate implementation procedure.

Geometric Tailoring: A Design for Manufacturing Method for Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Tooling

The goal of fabricating functional prototypes quickly is hindered by a mismatch of material properties between production materials and those used in rapid prototyping (RP) machines, such as stereolithography. Even when rapid tooling (RT) technologies are utilized for injection molded parts, differences in mold materials cause differences in molded part properties. To compensate for these mater...

Tailoring material properties of aluminum by local laser heat treatment

The local laser heat treatment of precipitation hardenable aluminum alloys enables the tailoring of the materials properties and the manufacturing of lightweight and crash-proof components for the body in white. For conventional aluminum sheet metals and profiles the formability is enhanced by an indirect approach. Thereby specific parts of the products are softened in order to improve the mate...

Towards STEP-based data transfer in layered manufacturing

This paper discusses the informational requirements of layered manufacturing (LM). The most common industrial use of LM today is for rapid prototyping, but we take a wider view of it as a flexible fabrication technology. Its use in building functional metallic parts under computer control has already been demonstrated in the research context. Commercial LM machines for building production parts...

Calculation of Natural Frequencies of Bi-Layered Rotating Functionally Graded Cylindrical Shells

In this paper, an exact analytical solution for free vibration of rotating bi-layered cylindrical shell composed of two independent functionally graded layers was presented. The thicknesses of the shell layers were assumed to be equal and constant. The material properties of the constituents of bi-layered FGM cylindrical shell were graded in the thickness direction of the layers of the shell ac...
